Take Your Online Network Offline
Just as you bring your face-to-face contacts into your online network, you can also bring your online contacts into your bricks-and-mortar world. This approach has worked wonders for Cynthia Greenawalt-Carvajal, a contributor to the New York Times bestseller Masters of Networking and the Wall Street Journal bestseller Masters of Success. Cynthia is a successful entrepreneur and investor, as well as a speaker, writer, and educator whose lectures are often about the power of social capital. A graduate of the Wharton School of Business, she helps entrepreneurs, community leaders, and executives develop their social capital and increase their return on relationships. Cynthia believes that the best way to accelerate a relationship, and create one in which referrals and trust flourish, is to invite your online network to offline events. “Facebook and LinkedIn get you to the door, and then it’s up to you to take action,” says Cynthia. “Then it’s time to leverage that relationship face-to-face.”
Cynthia suggests that you identify events in your calendar to which you can invite one or more of your online contacts whom you’d like to get to know better.
We can use Facebook and LinkedIn as a way to “water” the relationships we already have. The real fertilizing and heavy-duty work is making sure the seed turns into a fruit-bearing plant—so reach out and invite people to something. I sent out almost one hundred individual emails to women I’ve met over the last year saying, “Hey, I’m going to this event, want to join me?” It was an event celebrating National Women’s Day, and I invited several women who really impressed me. Many of them couldn’t make it, but they responded to say thanks for thinking of them and asked how I was. It was a simple thing that served as a huge investment in my social capital.
Face-to-face events also offer an opportunity to introduce your guests to one another. As Cynthia says, “When I promote one person to another, it’s the ultimate way to win that person over, because you’re making a personal investment in him or her.” You are essentially giving your seal of approval to those individuals, helping them to move forward and create success.
When you are invited to an event, think, “Who else in my network needs me to connect them to this opportunity?” A great networker serves her community as well as creates her own opportunities.
